10 ways to stay motivated with your exercise

There’s no feeling like the one you get after a good workout. It’s finding the motivation to get there that’ s often the problem. Why do your designated exercise times always seem to become the perfect time to update your Facebook status? Or all of a sudden you have a need to duck to the shops/call a friend? Before you know it the time’s gone and you are left telling yourself that you’ll get that workout in tomorrow.

Your motivation obviously needs motivating, so here are some tips to help you stick to your workout regime:

  1. Sign up for a Race! It doesn’t matter how small. Whether it’s an Iron Man or charity Fun Run it will give you a reason to train and something to work towards. Contact your local Road Runners, swim club or Triathlon club for upcoming events
  2. Make a Playlist – Put together a pumping playlist of your fave tunes to get you going. Research shows that upbeat music makes a workout seem easier, as it blocks your sensations of pain and effort.
  3. Take a chance. Boost your adrenaline with a sport that challenges your body and your fears – like rock climbing or mountain bike riding. Adrenaline is addictive! It will keep you going back for more….
  4. Team Effort! Find a training buddy and make and schedule fixed training times. You will be less likely to skip a training session if you will be letting down a mate. Training with someone else also makes it more fun!
  5. Reward Yourself. Treat yourself to something you love after a week of sticking with your training program. Maybe a massage, healthy meal out with friends, or that new outfit you’ve had your eye on…
  6. Invest in a Trainer. This will help you get better results, which will keep you motivated.
  7. Find Something you Love. If you don’t enjoy running, well guess what, you aren’t going to stick with it! The ‘best’ exercise is the one you are most happy doing.
  8. Avoid the Rut! Getting into an exercise routine is great, but you need variety to get ongoing results. When you put stress on your body, your body adapts, so switch your routine every 4-6 weeks.
  9. Write it Down. Buy a notebook and record your fitness goals and track you workouts. Include things like exercises, duration, weight and reps. Take note of your feelings as well. This will allow you to monitor your progress and identify any factors that derail your workouts.
  10. Show off. Splashing out on some new runners or workout clothes. This can give you the lift you need to get your new gear on and head to the gym!
