Freedom Foods BarleyMAX Breakfast Range

You can often find Nutrition Gurus hanging out in breakfast cereal isles scanning the Nutrition Information Panels of new products. Most cereals aren’t up to scratch for us to recommend to clients, usually by having not enough fibre and being loaded with sugar and salt.

But the good news is we have found a winner! The Goodness Superfoods BarleyMAX (TM) range of breakfast cereals. Like the Nutrition Gurus, CSIRO wanted to make peoples breakkie’s more nutritious. To do this, researchers developed a new non-genetically modified grain called BarleyMax (TM) that contains twice the amount of dietary fibre than other grains and four times the amount of resistant starch. BarleyMAX (TM) is also a good source of beta glucan.

What’s so great about Resistant Starch?

Well, after we eat resistant starch, it resists digestion in the small intestine and travels into the gut.

The good bacteria in our gut ferments Resistant Starch which results in:

  • The production of short chain fatty acids, including butyrate which have been shown to help prevent cancer
  • Increased stool bulk which promotes regularity
  • Increases insulin sensitivity, which helps maintain stable blood sugar levels which helps to prevent lifestyle diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

And Beta Glucan?

Beta glucan is a soluble fibre, which binds to LDL cholesterol (our bad cholesterol) in the gut and limits its absorption back into the body. The soluble fibre and attached LDL cholesterol then passes through the digestive tract and is eliminated as body waste. This means less bad cholesterol circulating in your body and less risk of developing heart disease .

So which SuperFood cereal is best for me?

If you like a crunchy starts to your day, there are 3 varieties of cereal flakes to choose from:

BarleyMax (TM)
Protein 1st

Perfect for people who suffer from the 10am tummy growl. Contains plenty of high protein amaranth and soy flakes which promotes satiety keeping you feeling fuller for longer.

Digestive 1st
Good choice for people for irregular bowels, as the high amount of fibre and resistant starch promote regularity. The added sultanas, apple, honey and golden syrup increases the sugar content, but the extra sweetness means you won’t need to add honey.

Heart 1st
Great for people with high cholesterol as it contains the highest amount of beta-glucan which lowers the absorption of bad cholesterol. Also contains plenty of nuts, seeds and dried fruit which contain antioxidants which neutralises free radicals which have the potential to damage arteries.

Nutrition Gurus Pick – Quick Sachets barley and Oats 1st

Quick Sachet Barley plus Oats
Great for people who may want to loose weight, improve their heart health or digestion! Stand out from the others as contains the lowest amount of sodium and sugar while still being high in beta-glucans and resistant starch. The part we love most about this product is the come in handy sachets which are great for travelling and they are super quick and eay to prepare (all you need is boiling water!). The sachets also makes this a great option fo people who have trouble controlling there portion sizes

Seriously? You must know these products are loaded with sugar. It doesn’t matter what else they have, all that sugar makes them a bad idea for anyone to actually eat. Do you have any financial incentive for this recommendation?

Sweet Poison

This book was written after the author claims to have shed 40kgs without dieting or exercising. Gillespie says all he did to loose the weight was cut all the fructose from his diet. Fructose is a monosaccharide (a single unit of sugar) which is found in many foods including fruits, honey, chocolate and breakfast cereals.
