On my way home after a post-work run I realised my stomach was as empty as my fridge. I detoured to the supermarket to grab something for dinner and some supplies for the week.
I headed straight to the carb isle in need of some energy after my long run. And that’s when I noticed something new – SunRice Quick Cups.
SunRice Quick Cups are individually portioned microwavable rice containers. They come in twin packs of 125g, which is a good portion size of carbohydrates for a main meal for most people. Quick Cups are made with basmati rice, which is one of the lowest GI rices around which keep us feeling fuller for longer and promotes stable blood glucose levels.
SunRice Quick cups come in 6 different varieties (Brown rice, White rice, Teriyaki, Egg Fried rice, Chicken Rice).
I got home exhausted and zapped a Quick Cup of Teriyaki Rice in the microwave for 40 seconds, peeled back the lid and I there was a serve of perfectly cooked rice. I topped it with with a bag of steamed vegies (also microwaved) and a tin of pink salmon. I had dinner ready in less than 5 minutes, and only had one bowl to wash up. Too easy.
The Brown Rice Quick Cup is the pick of the bunch, as it contains the least amount of fat, salt and additives and is the highest in fibre.
However, the flavoured varieties aren’t too bad, in terms of fat (about 2g total fat content and <1g saturated fat) and kilojoule content (around 800kj). However, their high sodium content makes them a poor choice for people trying to limit there salt intake.
At $3.30 for a twin pack, it is much cheaper to cook your own rice. However, they are much cheaper and healthier than a picking up a takeaway. Sunrice Quick Cups are perfect to keep in the pantry on standby on those days that you just run out of time.
