Throw out your bathroom scales! They will give you meaningless results. How many times have you exercised hard and eaten healthily only to find you have gained weight on the scales? This is because the scales do not tell you what is really going on with your body composition.
If you want to know what your ideal weight really is or exactly how much body fat you really need to lose to be healthy, then you need a total body composition scan. We are delighted to announce that at Health Management (Atherton branch) we have the technology to help you!
DEXA is a state-of-the-art method of measuring the 3 major components of your body – BONE, MUSCLE MASS and BODY FAT.
A DEXA scanner passes X-rays of 2 different energies through the tissues of the body. It can calculate very accurately how many grams of bone, muscle and fat you have in all the regions of your body – arms, legs and trunk.
This information can help you with your weight loss program. Can you imagine knowing that you had gained 2 kg of lean muscle mass and lost 2 kg body fat, for example? Even though your weight may not have changed on the scales, your body will be much leaner and healthier and your clothes will be looser. The extra muscle mass will cause you to have a higher metabolism which in turn burns more fat, so the total body weight eventually decreases.
Athletes use this information to have the competitive edge in their field. The information from a DEXA scan can assist with planning diets and training regimes to achieve maximum potential in their particular sport.
Many clients report how useful it is to see an image of their own body showing clearly where the fat and muscle are distributed. No set of scales can show you that. Clients find that instead of focussing on “weight loss” they get better results if they focus on “fat loss” and they can clearly see the results with a DEXA scan.
With a DEXA scan you will know when your weight loss program is working and when it’s not. If it’s not working, the Dietitian can help you design an eating plan with the right amount of calories (kJ) you need, the right amount of protein, fat and carbohydrate so that you can target fat reduction and muscle maintenance or gain.
The DEXA scan is completely safe and the radiation dose is extremely low. The scan takes about 7 minutes to complete. We recommend having a scan every 2 -3 months for those actively trying to lose fat or gain lean muscle mass.
Scans cost $120 and can be booked by phoning (07) 4051 9093. Some private health funds offer rebates on DEXA scans.
